Ethics, Rhetoric, Politics: In Praise of Ambiguity
Alexander Stagnell. Huddinge: Södertörn University. In Swedish.
Abstract
Since antiquity, rhetoric has been accused of being an immoral art concerned only with success, with no regard for the true or the good. Even today, more than two thousand years after Plato’s condemnation, the study of rhetoric lacks a thorough discussion of the ethics of rhetoric.
The first part of the book reviews how the ancient rhetoricians and sophists answered Plato’s critique, and examines how contemporary Scandinavian handbooks deal with the question. In the second part, the author offers his own answer to the question of how rhetoric relates to ethics.
